100 Series: XPosure Runs

The story of Xposure runs, from humble beginnings to the big stage.

Xposure isn’t just about basketball; it’s a testament to belief, community strength, and limitless possibilities.

In 2020, 8 years after Mustafa moved to Chicago, he developed a vision. As a father of two, he understood the value of opportunities and recognition, especially in the competitive world of high school basketball. His older son, Xavier, now 19, plays basketball on a full scholarship at Indiana Tech University, a testament to the power of visibility and the drive behind the creation of XPosure Runs. This isn’t the only success story either, many other players have been able to receive scholarships as well. This platform, born from both personal and communal aspirations, has steadily grown into a source of opportunity for young basketball players.

Launched in March 2020, XPosure Runs was started with the goal of giving young athletes the recognition they deserve. Inspired by the open runs orchestrated by Lakers coach Phil Haney, Mustafa saw the potential to replicate this model for high school athletes. Despite the pandemic shutting down gyms shortly after the inception of the platform, Mustafa’s determination did not waver. He raised $10,000 to host open gyms, and the initiative began to flourish, reflecting his commitment to creating a space for young talent to thrive.

XPosure Runs provides a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills against top competition, offering them a chance to be seen by college scouts and coaches. This effort has not only benefited players like his son, but has also created a valuable community resource. The platform’s growth is marked by significant milestones, such as three teams being invited to play in major pro-ams in Chicago, the Unsigned Senior Showcase, and his Xposure podcast as well. These opportunities have put countless players on the radar of college recruiters, significantly enhancing their chances of securing scholarships and continuing their basketball careers.

One of the standout events orchestrated by XPosure Runs is the Unsigned Senior Showcase. The first event, held in October 2022, attracted top talent in the state, facilitated by Ryan Foran who was crucial in helping attract sponsors as well as being a co-creator of the Chi-Town Showcase. The success of this event led to a second showcase in March 2023, which drew 60 college coaches. By 2024, the event continued to grow, featuring 45 coaches and introducing innovative elements like “FaceTime,” a basketball speed-dating concept allowing players and coaches to connect directly. Coaches would write down the names of a few players they were interested in meeting. After the workouts were over, they would meet the player with their parents/guardian. This would give them a chance to tell them not only about their program, but also extend an offer if they felt it was warranted. This unique approach led to every participant leaving the showcase with at least one opportunity to play basketball at the next level, showing the impact and effectiveness of XPosure Runs.

Some of the talent who played in the Chi-Town Showcase would be Jeremy Fears (Michigan State, Olympic Gold Medal Winner, McDonald’s All-American), Matas Buzelis (G-League Ignite, Projected NBA lottery pick), Jeremiah Fears (Illinois Commit, Olympic Gold Medal Winner), Richard Barron (Providence University), and Dalen Davis (Princeton University) to name a few.

Mustafa’s podcast, launched nearly a year ago, complements the exposure platform by helping players gain confidence in interviews. By interviewing high school players after games and featuring them on his podcast, Mustafa prepares these young athletes for future interactions with the media, scouts, and coaches. This initiative not only helps players get over their first interview jitters but also adds another dimension to their personal development, teaching them valuable communication skills.

However, the journey has not been without challenges. Securing funding and support remains a significant hurdle. Many costs are covered out-of-pocket or through sponsorships, with funds directed primarily toward advertising and event expenses. Despite this, the platform has received phenomenal support from various individuals and organizations. Colorful Experience, a well-known marketing agency, has provided high-level marketing materials, often at discounted rates. As a company, they’ve worked with some brands like RedBull, SalesForce, and the FIFA World Cup. SVI – Sports Ventures International, a father-and-son business from Indianapolis, donates uniforms and gear, enhancing the visibility and professionalism of XPosure Runs events. AGM Plus has lended a hand in the production of the podcast. These contributions have been vital in maintaining the platform’s operations and expanding its reach.

Volunteers, including top photographers and videographers, have also been instrumental in capturing high-quality content for the players. A unique aspect of the unsigned senior showcase is where each participant is paired with a photographer or videographer to ensure no player is left behind in getting their highlight reel. This personalized attention ensures that every athlete receives the exposure they need to attract college interest.

It’s clear that the value’s in which Mustafa has started his business have not wavered. When asked his favorite quote, he replied with one his mother raised him with. ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.’ In talking with him, it’s easy to see this quote brought to life. The connections he’s made and the community he’s been able to bring together is a testament to treating people the right way.

Mustafa’s journey in building XPosure Runs has taught him valuable lessons about the importance of community and authenticity. “There are people out here willing and wanting to support,” he says. “People want to be a part of it, they see the vision and the necessity of what XPosure Runs is doing.” Not being originally from Chicago, Mustafa recognizes that authenticity matters. Being genuine and showing sincerity in interactions with others has been a cornerstone of his approach, fostering a sense of trust and mutual respect within the community.

Looking ahead, Mustafa envisions XPosure Runs expanding its reach to a regional and national level. While top players will always get their spotlight, XPosure Runs aims to become a recognized entity for uncovering and showcasing the diamonds in the rough. Highlighting his commitment to providing opportunities for all players, not just the already recognized stars. With the growth and values instilled by Mustafa, there is no doubt that XPosure Runs will continue to make a significant impact in the basketball world.
